Basic RFID Operation

• A reader unit continuously sends out "Who are you" commands
• When a RFID tag recognizes a "Who are you" command, it responds by transmitting its unique ID number (typically 64-bit bits in size)
• The reader unit receives the unique ID number and sends it along to a control computer
• The control computer uses the ID number to:
• Unlock a door
• Start a car engine
• Deduct money from a bank account
• etc.
